In one week, New York City would see an earthquake and a hurricane.
say what?
One cant prepare for an unusual earthquake, but as a fan of all things New Orleans, I couldnt let a hurricane (the storm) pass without making hurricanes (the drink) at home. While others were preparing with milk and water and bread, i wanted to make sure i had the necessary ingredients for this most appropriate drink.
My version isnt all that different from the standard (i passed over a few of the versions i found online as they sounded just too teeth-rottingly sweet - something i have found true of the version served by Pat O's in NOLA) save for the fact that i had to make a small substitution of mango-passion fruit juice for the straight-up passion fruit due to a mixup which can be attributed to the mass confusion caused by the frantic shoppers of fairway when it was announced that fairway would be closing at 10am - 13 minutes from when the announcement was made...
In my quest to perfect the New York Hurricane, I ended up making 3 versions of this drink last night - all in the name of getting it just right for you.
Yeah, thats why i made 3. no, really, it is. stop laughing! what kind of drunk do you think i am?
ok, fine. you are right. but my drunkardness is your gain, i swear.
New York Hurricane
adapted from about.com

2 oz dark rum
2 oz mango-passion fruit juice
1.5 oz orange juice
1 tbsp grenadine
1 tbsp simple syrup
juice from one lime
maraschino cherry (optional)
***
Place all ingredients, except the cherry, in a cocktail shaker and shake with 2-3 ice cubes to combine & chill
Serve in fun cocktail glass and throw a maraschino cherry in for good measure. (cherry optional, but recommended)

i know you are here, waiting on the edge of your seat to see what this week's CSA take looks like, but too bad - keep waiting.
see, sometimes life gets in the way of everything else, and this weekend was one of those times... without getting into the details, let's just say that there was a friend in need. and she wasnt in need of farm fresh veggies, she was in need of alcohol...
i think the weekend can be summarized by telling you what we drank each night - starting with bottles of wine, beer and kahlua singles... and then, suddenly, it became immediately necessary that we drink chocolate martinis...
unfortunately, we were at the store with no internet access and unable to remember what all went into a chocolate martini, so we improvised...
Vanilla Vodka, Godiva Liquor and Starbucks Liquor...
Susan got the bright idea to put all of the alcohol into the freezer so that we could have nicely chilled drinks... what she forgot to bank on is that there isnt really enough of an alcohol concentration in Godiva Chocolate Liquor to keep it from freezing... oops.
so we made her sit with it between her legs until we felt she was sufficiently punished...
unfortunately, her thighs did not generate enough heat and we had to microwave it anyway... still, the shaker was icy cold...
(note to self: do not attempt the 'will my tongue freeze to this metal' trick on shaker... it does look tempting though, doesnt it???)
and the drinks were ready...
mermaid and monkey adornments mandatory (and on sale for 50 for 25cents at target this week!)
Chocolate Coffee Martinis
Courtesy of Susan, Kristen and many internet sites everywhere
6 shots vanilla vodka
5 shots godiva chocolate liquor
2 shots starbucks coffee liquor
combine all in a shaker (with ice if your havent kept your alcohol in the freezer) and, well, shake until well combined.
divide between 2 - 3 martini glasses and garnish with small plastic toys.
